Principle Background
Totem - noun | to·tem \ˈtō-təm\ | A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe.
- Totem explores the modern communications systems that underpin the technologically mediated societies of Europe.
- By using sound and light to represent the live communications experience of viewers and participants Totem exists as a form of communication that speaks universally, regardless of the language or content of the GSM signals from which it is derived Totem generates communication through the universal languages of light and sound.
- GSM towers have become the modern totems of the world they are the central pillars through which our social ties are maintained and as such our sense of identity constructed.
Interactive Experience
-Totem will stand out as a beacon of light within the public space, encouraging viewers to explore more closely.
-Once within the GSM detection zone viewers become participants through the signals they are emitting.
-As the interaction becomes more defined viewers will explore the light and sound installation through their movement and their actions with the GSM devices.
Concept
-Totem is an interactive light sculpture that explores modern communication through light and sound.
-As ubiquitous connectivity becomes an ever-more essential part of our normal communication Totem seeks to explore the hidden signals that surround us and keep us in touch with our family, friends and our work. By capturing and representing these signals through light and sound Totem becomes an interactive conversation between viewers about the technology that underpins our societies.
-Through its playful form Totem reacts to both "passive" and "active" participants, those who create or cancel a call (GSM signal stream) in order to interact or those who discover the signals they emit without their knowledge.
- The delicate and intricate balance of the visuals will contrast with a processed generative soundscape that will call into relief both the social and technical aspects of data transmission allowing viewers to explore and examine the consequences of each transmission, both positive and negative. |
